Importance of Digital Rights Management (DRM) in the Era of Enterprise Mobility – Thinking Beyond EMM

Importance of Digital Rights Management (DRM) in the Era of Enterprise Mobility – Thinking Beyond EMM Earlier, company-owned devices represented the majority of endpoints but over last few years the enterprise mobility trend has picked up. In the coming years, it is expected that there will be far more mobile devices (including bring-your-own-device (BYOD)) than laptops/desktops accessing and sharing the corporate data as a normal workflow (and even beyond corporate firewalls).

Top Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) players including MobileIron, AirWatch, MaaS360 and Good added significant features over the last few years trying to form a complete mobility solution. But they are still far away from ensuring 100% security of corporate data as the files moves beyond these managed devices and get shared with third-parties. This is where enterprise digital rights management (DRM aka IRM – Information Rights Management) comes into play.

DRM allows enterprise IT to automatically apply access rights to the shared files as part of policy enforcement. Hence it is important that as part of enterprise mobility strategy, IT has the ability to apply DRM policies uniformly across all end-users irrespective of what devices they use – not only company managed PCs (Windows or Mac) but also smartphones and tablets managed through an EMM solution.

Vaultize takes an information-centric (or document-centric) approach to information security by ensuring that corporate information and data always stays in control of IT irrespective of what EMM solution is deployed in the organization. It allows end-users to create, access, edit, annotate and share documents irrespective of where they are (within as well as beyond the corporate fence) and independent of the device they use (laptop, desktop, smart phone or tablet) – whether managed or unmanaged.

Vaultize seamlessly integrates rights management into the regular workflow of end users by embedding the controls within the documents themselves. The files shared across corporate fence are DRM encrypted using patent-pending Micro-containerization technology such that the access rights travel along with the documents. The documents are only usable by the authorized recipients and within the authorized environment.

Vaultize allows the document owner (and the corporate IT) to control the use of shared documents and manage (and even revoke) the permissions to open, view, download, print, copy-paste, forward and edit those documents. Vaultize DRM protects documents even after they are downloaded by the recipient on a device not under control of the company IT. In addition to the protection, the embedded DRM enables detailed tracking and auditing of shared files wherever they go – independent of location, device and user.
